If a glyph that is found deep within iOS 13.2 Public Beta is to be believed, we might have our first look at what the next-generation AirPods might look like. This icon also seems to corroborate with some other tidbits that we’ve come to hear about the AirPods 3.
These AirPods have a completely new tip design with the same stalk that has been characteristic of the AirPods. The AirPods 3 seem to have rubber tips that fit into the ear canal and are unlike what the previous two gen of AirPods are. This change in design might attribute to the noise-cancelling feature which Bloomberg reported about last year. The current-gen AirPods don’t fit well enough in the ear to block out ambient noise and hence a redesign of the ear tip makes sense if the next-gen AirPods will actually boast of noise-cancelling.
A mockup made by Michael Rieplhuber translates the icon found in iOS. First impressions based on this mockup and I’m questioning Apple’s design choice yet again. If the design of the original AirPods was polarizing, this takes it to the next level. The AirPods 3 look like a couple of hairdryers that are shrunk down and fit with drivers to play music. But then again, the fit and finish of the actual AirPods might be way different from what we see here.
According to reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, two new AirPod models will go into mass production between Q4 2019 and Q1 2020. Hence it shouldn’t be too long before we get to know more about the upcoming AirPods. But considering that the Apple has already announced a refreshed version of the original AirPods, it’s likely that the AirPods 3 will get announced in 2020.
