Smartphone manufacturers are working hard to push the boundaries of design and make devices that excel in form as well as function. The upcoming Vivo NEX 3 might just be the most radical approach to that philosophy, as suggested by leaked display pictures.
Vivo’s NEX lineup has pushed the boundaries of smartphone displays by trimming the bezels along the edges and pushing the front camera in unconventional places to reach record-setting screen-to-body ratios.
There are a couple of techniques smartphone OEMs can adopt to improve their display’s imersiveness. The most common techniques include opting for slimmer side bezels, trying to craft a thinner display strip along the chin and put the front camera in a notch or a punch-hole. The more premium solutions include getting rid of the front camera from the face of the face for something like a pop-up selfie camera.
The other approach includes shipping a curved display as that helps in fitting a bigger screen in a smaller footprint, but there’s a mathematical reason to it too. For calculating the screen-to-body ratio of a device, the display size is always calculated as if it were a flat display (thus making the curved ones count as a larger one) whereas the body is calculated at the actual dimensions of the device. This theoretically means that a phone can cross 100% screen-to-body ratio.
That is precisely what the Vivo NEX 3 might be trying. As the leaked display panel suggests, it will be the sharpest curve on any smartphone at an angle that is almost 90-degrees. This helps create the illusion of a phone with almost non-existent bezels.
Ice Universe also adds that the Vivo NEX 3 display will have no notch or hole and will have an extremely narrow chin.
The Vivo NEX 3 is building up to be a really cool looking smartphone and the increasing frequency of leaks suggest that the phone might be unveiled in the coming months.
