ZTE seems to have some interesting smartphones in the pipeline, as a new patent suggests a smartphone with a bezel-less display and a secondary small display on the back.
This year, we saw smartphone makers try all sorts of tricks to avoid the notch, including holes, pop-up cameras, sliders and even flip cameras! While all of these are intermediate steps to a full-screen future, they are less than ideal. Moving parts on a smartphone is never a good idea and may fail to stand the test of time. ZTE seems to have a more creative approach by getting rid of the front camera altogether.
According to this recent patent, ZTE could be working on a flagship phone with no selfie camera, and just wants users to use the primary camera on the back for selfies. The secondary display on the rear should act as the viewfinder to help you compose your selfies, while letting you take advantage of the much more superior primary camera array.
This is not the first time ZTE has toyed with the concept of a dual-screen smartphone. Last year, they unveiled the ZTE Axon M concept which was a foldable device with 2 screens on the outside; and more recently, the ZTE Nubia X which was their flagship handheld device which had a whole entire second display on the back and could be used for most tasks.
This patent could be the successor to that Nubia X, and will sport a smaller screen with selective functionality. Other hardware elements apparent from the render suggests a big display with no obtrusions, two speaker grilles on the bottom flanking the USB type-C connector. Considering that the other display does not cover the entire back panel, it should help the phone ship with a bigger battery or a slimmer frame. The camera housing seems big enough for at least 3 sensors. There’s no physical fingerprint scanner, so that could imply and in-display solution.
A big part of the experience will be decided by the execution and functionality of an entire second display. This is likely to be a premium flagship with specifications to back it up. More information on this mysterious Nubia flagship should surface soon.
