Adani Bangladesh

On 15th July 2023, the Adani Group declared that the first transnational project in India, located in Godda, Jharkhand, would be put into service to send electricity to the grid in Bangladesh. Following the full load commencement of power supply to Bangladesh from the Group’s Ultra Super-Critical Thermal Power Plant (U.S.C.T.P.P.) in Godda, Chairman Gautam Adani visited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka. The Godda U.S.C.T.P.P symbolises the port-to-power conglomerate’s foray into international power projects.

Adani Power Jharkhand Ltd. (A.P.J.L.), a fully-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Ltd., will export all of the electricity produced at the plant to another country. The company announced that on 12th July 2023, it completed the Godda plant’s dependable capacity test, which was a prerequisite for the Adani Bangladesh project under the terms of the power purchase agreement (P.P.A.) with the Bangladesh Power Development Board, which was signed in November 2017 and is valid for 25 years.

Gautam Adani meets Bangladesh P.M. for commencement of power supply

On 15th July 2023, after the Adani Bangladesh project’s full load of power supply from the Adani Group’s Ultra Super-Critical Thermal Power Plant in Godda, India, began, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani paid a visit to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka. The first international power project developed by the Adani Group, Godda U.S.C.T.P.P., is the first in India to be put into service where all electricity generated is exported to another nation.

‘Honoured to have met Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the full load initiation and handover of the 1600 MW Ultra Super-Critical Godda Power Plant’, Mr. Gautam Adani tweeted following the meeting. He commended the committed teams from Bangladesh and India for overcoming COVID and commissioning the plant in an unprecedented 3 and 1/2 years. On 12th July 2023, A.P.J.L., a fully owned subsidiary of Adani Power Ltd., finished the Godda plant’s reliable capacity test.

As required by the P.P.A. with Bangladesh, the reliable capacity test was carried out throughout the allotted 6-hour period to assess the plant’s two units’ ability to operate after they started generating energy. In the Indian state of Jharkhand, the Godda plant’s 800 MW first unit started operating commercially on 6th April 2023. On 26th June 2023, the second unit—also with a capacity of 800 MW—followed.

A.P.J.L. would supply 1,496 MW from the Godda U.S.C.T.P.P. under the P.P.A. with the Bangladesh Power Development Board, executed in November 2017 for 25 years, via a 400 kV dedicated transmission system connected to the Bangladesh grid.

The Adani Bangladesh project will make the Bangladesh’s economy stronger

Bangladesh’s power situation will improve with the electricity supply from Godda, which will replace the expensive power produced using liquid fuel. As per the statement, Bangladesh will benefit from the shift by experiencing a decrease in the average cost of power purchased. According to an announcement from the Adani Group, the Godda power plant is the first in India to have begun operations with 100% flue gas desulphurization (F.G.D.) and a selective catalytic converter (S.C.R.).

According to the statement, the Adani Bangladesh project would supply electricity that will greatly improve the situation in the adjacent nation by replacing expensive power generated from liquid fuel and lowering the average cost of power purchased.

In the long-standing connection between India and Bangladesh, the Godda Power Plant is a strategic asset. It is the first power plant in the nation to operate with 100% S.C.R., 100% Flue Gas Desulphurization (F.G.D.), and zero water discharge from the beginning.

The Godda Power Plant is a strategic asset

According to Adani Power C.E.O., the Adani Bangladesh project is a strategic asset in the long-standing partnership between India and Khyalia. This power plant is the first in the nation to operate with 100% F.G.D., 100% S.C.R., and zero water discharge from the beginning.  Bangladesh boasts one of the biggest power stations in the Indian subcontinent that runs on liquid fuels.

The combined installed capacity of the heavy fuel oil (H.F.O.) and high-speed diesel (HSD) based reactors is around 6,329 MW and 1,290 MW, respectively, for over 7,600 MW. According to the statement, the Godda plant’s total tariff is competitive compared to peers despite Bangladesh currently having long-term P.P.A. connections with three other imported coal-based generators.

Conclusion

The Adani Group’s Godda power plant in India is a major milestone in the country’s efforts to export electricity to Bangladesh. The plant is the first of its kind in India to operate with 100% flue gas desulphurization (F.G.D.) and a selective catalytic converter (S.C.R.), and it will help to reduce Bangladesh’s reliance on expensive liquid fuel-based power generation. The Adani Bangladesh project is also a strategic asset in the long-standing relationship between India and Bangladesh.
