COURSE ELIGIBILITY
To enlist in the Experience and Equivalency Class 1 MELT Program, drivers must:
- Have a valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license.
- Have had a Class 3 Alberta driver’s license or the equivalent driver’s license from another Canadian jurisdiction for two (2) years or more.
- Drivers who earned their two years of experience by having a Class 3 equivalent driver’s license in another Canadian jurisdiction must show a driver’s abstract from that jurisdiction to establish that they meet this requirement.
- Have at least two (2) years of experience driving a single motor vehicle with three (3) or more axles. Drivers must submit one of the following to establish that they satisfy this criterion:
- A signed letter(s) from your employer stating that you have at least two years of experience driving a single motor vehicle with three or more axles. The employer’s contact information must be included in the letter.
- A signed letter(s) from customers or suppliers stating that you use a vehicle with three or more axles to perform your service to them and have done so for at least two years. The contact information for the clients or suppliers must be included in the letter.
POINTS TO REMEMBER
- Before we can schedule your road test, you must first pass a written exam, which may be taken at any registrar’s office. To prepare for the exam, read the Basic Driver’s Handbook and the Commercial Driver’s Handbook.
- A daily log book for a two-year period that fulfills the standards provided in the Drivers’ Hours of Service Regulation or the Government of Canada’s Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations
